iPads , iPhones and Kindles, Oh My!

I read an article in Sunday's NY Daily News about New Yorkers addiction to apps.  I don't know about you, but when I hear the word "app" I think of food (appetizers), NOT electronics.  Even though I am only in my early 40's, I feel more and more like a dinosaur each passing day.  With an array of new gadgets and the "apps" that go with them constantly coming out on the market I find that I just can't keep up.  I am quickly falling out of the loop.  Take the Kindle and other products of that nature for example.  Whatever happened to good old fashioned books?  Maybe I shouldn't admit this, but I do not own an iPad or Kindle.  I'm an old fashioned girl who loves good old fashioned books (You know, the ones that are actually made with paper).  I love the feel and smell of them.  I inhale deeply as I walk into a book store because I love the smell of new books.  Wait, I have an idea for a new product!  You know how they have "new car" smell in those air fresheners that dangle from your rear-view mirror?  Well, why not make a "new book" scent?  No?  Bad idea?  Oh well.

I love being able to pick up an actual book, glance throught its pages before buyng it, hold it, feel its weight in my hands.  But, I am a dinosaur.  My kind is becoming extinct.

I do not own a Blu-ray DVD player (heck, I still own two VCRs!), I barely manage to work my cell phone (bluetooth?  What's that?) and I have no idea what an iPod is.  Oh wait; my ten year old son just informed me that it is some kind of gadget that plays music (whatever happened to the walkman?)  Please, somebody tell me, when did I turn into my parents?  Am I alone in feeling this way or are there other dinosaurs roaming around out there?

I guess I am still  somewhat in the loop because I did managed to figure out how to create this blog.  Right?

Thank you so much for stopping by Everyday Bliss today! I have to admit owning a Kindle. I LOVE the instant gratification it affords... think of a book and you can have it in your hands in seconds. BUT with that being said I love the experience of reading SO MUCH more with a real book.

I have a very old NO APP flip phone so in some ways I am a dinosaur too!!

crazy how you turn into your parents! I can't justify an ipad or kindle since sadly, I don't finish many books. but for those I do, I want the real thing. I am sort of addicted to my phone its a droid "incredible" sort of like a mini computer but it sucks as a phone.

Kathy - Congrats again on being a BON. I don't know if I will ever give in and purchase a Kindle. You do make it sound tempting though. :-)

Margo - Thanks so much for becoming a follower. I am going to pay a visit to your blog in just a few moments. I'm glad you share my passion for actual books.

Chrissy - It is such a shame about the old book stores closing up. There are still a few in Brooklyn, but not many. I know what you mean about finding old first edition books. It is like going on a treasure hunt when you step into those old stores. Lots of fun. :-)

Hey Green Monkey - Great to have you back. :-) Funny how your "phone" sucks as a phone but excels at other things. I'm sure I couldn't begin to learn how to use it. I am like Everyday Kathy who said in her above response that she owns a plain old flip phone with no apps. I might just have to upgrade though because my cell plan is almost up and they always give you a new phone as a reward for renewing the contract. I don't think they even make my current phone anymore! :-)

Margo - I have trouble posting on certain blogs. I have no idea why. I tried to leave a comment on your blog but it would not post. So, I will say it here...You go girl!! Being asked to participate in that writing class is such an honor. You should be proud of yourself! Congrats!

Awww thank you. You damn right I am proud of myself. Especially since English is NOT my first language:) And thank you for at least trying to comment. I had a bad luck with commenting on another blog, too. Wonder what it's all about.

I'm 62 and have to confess that I would be lost without my Blackberry. (Sigh). I don't use a ton of apps, though, just keep my calendar and contacts there, and check the weather. It's cool for texting, and I have internet access, and I actually read and comment on blogs posts from it sometimes! So, I've rationalized my Blackberry, but I have not defense for owning three iPods.

Thanks for following me. It is nice to meet you. I am in the same boat as you. I don't really have any of those things either and probably never will. Heck, I still remember 8 track tapes and dial phones, and typing on a manual typewriter.

I am a total bibliophile but I am also a gadget freak. I giggled to myself just yesterday about the incongruity of reading Uncle Tom's Cabin on my Nook. :)
I will never give up real books though and I collect vintage children's books. Sometimes I go down in my library and just run my hands over a favorite or two and smile.
